Screw Pile Foundations in Ryder Lake

Ryder Lake is a rural community in the hills on the east side of Chilliwack, a few kilometres above the valley floor. Sloping, wooded lots like these are where helical screw piles earn their keep: the equipment is compact, nothing has to be poured, and each pile can be set to its own height so a building sits level on uneven ground.

We have installed a tiny home foundation at Ryder Lake, and the photos are in our gallery.

Building above the valley

Ryder Lake is a small, forested, farming-based community set among the mountains east of Chilliwack, including Elk Mountain and Mount Thom, and sometimes described as a hanging valley above the city. It was first settled around 1890 and is named for an early resident, John Ferris Ryder.

Hillside and wooded lots bring slopes, trees, rock and drainage to think about. A foundation that needs a level pad, forms and a concrete delivery is awkward on a site like that. Piles are not: compact equipment can reach tight or sloped spots, and pile heights are adjusted one by one in the field, so the structure can be brought to level without heavy earthworks.

Where the ground is rocky, pilot-pointed piles penetrate with precision. Where it is soft, the piles pass through to firm ground below. Either way the torque readings tell us what each pile has reached before the building goes on.

Projects that suit Ryder Lake

Before you build at Ryder Lake

  • Check permit and zoning requirements with the City of Chilliwack. They depend on the lot and the structure.
  • Tell us about access: how wide and steep the road or driveway is, any gates and any overhead branches, so the crew arrives with the right equipment.
  • Tell us what you know about the ground: rock, wet or soft areas, steep slopes and nearby water.
  • Have underground utilities located before any ground work. BC 1 Call is a free service.

Our Ryder Lake tiny home

The Ryder Lake tiny home project in our gallery follows the home from its first views through the lift onto the piles to its final placement. It is a good picture of what a tiny home foundation looks like on a country lot.

Common questions

Can you install on a steep or wooded lot?
In many cases, yes. Pile heights are adjusted individually and compact equipment can be used where access is tight. Describe the slope and the access when you send your details and we will plan around it.
Have you worked at Ryder Lake before?
Yes. Our Ryder Lake tiny home project is in the gallery, with photos of the home being lifted onto its piles and in its final placement.
Will the equipment damage my property?
Far less than a poured foundation would. Piles go in with compact equipment, with no large excavation and no concrete delivery, so trees, roots and natural ground are disturbed much less.
