Screw Pile Foundations in Abbotsford

We install Postech helical screw pile foundations in Abbotsford, from farm outbuildings and shipping containers to decks, sheds and additions. One of our documented projects is an Abbotsford shipping container foundation: the gallery photos follow it from site preparation through pile installation to the final level check.

Building on the Sumas Prairie

A large part of Abbotsford's farmland, the Sumas Prairie, was once the bed of Sumas Lake, a lake of about 10,000 acres at the base of Sumas Mountain. It was drained in the 1920s, partly for flood control and mostly to create farmland, and the low ground has flooded since, most recently in November 2021.

Ground like this deserves care. Former lake beds and floodplains commonly have soft, silty layers and a high water table in the wet season. That is exactly where it matters to see how each pile performs: our equipment monitors torque as every pile goes in, so it is driven until it reaches the strength it was chosen for, instead of relying on an assumption about the soil.

The higher ground around Abbotsford, such as the slopes of Sumas Mountain, has different conditions again. Every property is different, so send us the address and what you are building, and we will tell you what we see.

Projects that suit Abbotsford

Before you build in Abbotsford

  • Check permit requirements with the City of Abbotsford. They depend on the structure and the property.
  • Parts of Abbotsford are floodplain. Municipalities can set requirements for building elevation in flood-prone areas, so ask before you plan a structure on low ground.
  • If your property is in the Agricultural Land Reserve, check what the Agricultural Land Commission allows before you plan.
  • Have underground utilities located before any ground work. BC 1 Call is a free service.

Common questions

Do you install in Abbotsford?
Yes. We have installed a shipping container foundation in Abbotsford, and we serve the Abbotsford area from Chilliwack. Send us the address and your project details for a free quote.
Are screw piles suitable for the Sumas Prairie?
Piles are designed for ground where a shallow footing would be a gamble, because each pile is driven until it reaches the strength it was chosen for, and torque is monitored as it goes in. Conditions differ from site to site, so we assess your property before we recommend a layout.
Can you support a container or farm building on piles?
Yes. The pile layout is based on the load and the soil, whether it is a shipping container, a shed or an outbuilding. Piles can also be unscrewed later if the building needs to be moved.
